DIGESTION
Fibre, introduced simply.
Pumpkin powder is an easy way to add dietary fibre without storing an opened tin. What matters is introducing it carefully and following the feeding guide.
What dietary fibre does
Fibre is the part of plant food that is not fully digested. Different fibres behave differently: some hold water, some are fermented by gut bacteria, and some add bulk. Pumpkin contains a mixture, which is why it is commonly used as a convenient meal addition.
Introduce it carefully
Follow the feeding guide for your dog’s size, mix it thoroughly into the usual food and keep fresh water available. Start one dietary change at a time. Adding too much fibre too quickly can be counterproductive and may lead to wind or looser stools.
Look beyond a single stool
Food changes, scavenging, stress, parasites, infection and illness can all affect digestion. A supplement is not a diagnosis. Persistent or repeated changes deserve investigation rather than repeated additions to the bowl.
When to contact your vet
Seek prompt advice for blood, repeated vomiting, marked lethargy, pain, dehydration, a swollen abdomen, suspected obstruction, or symptoms in a very young, elderly or medically vulnerable dog.
