INGREDIENT GUIDE

Green-lipped mussel for dogs, explained.

It is one of the best-known ingredients in joint supplements, but the useful questions are simple: what is it, how much is actually in the formula, what is it combined with, and will your dog take it?

What is green-lipped mussel?

Green-lipped mussel is a shellfish native to New Zealand. It naturally contains lipids, proteins and other nutrients, and is commonly included in complementary feeds intended for joint and mobility routines.

It is not the same as glucosamine or MSM. Those are separate ingredients. A formula may contain one, two or all three, which is why reading the complete composition matters more than reading the front label.

Full-fat powder and extracts are not the same thing

Green-lipped mussel can appear as a whole or full-fat powder, or as a more concentrated extract. The milligram figure cannot be compared fairly without knowing the form. Canine Vita uses full-fat green-lipped mussel in its joint formulas, so the label should be judged as that ingredient—not as if it were a concentrated extract.

What should you check?

Who should avoid it?

Green-lipped mussel is shellfish. Do not use it where shellfish must be avoided. If your dog takes medication, has a diagnosed condition, is pregnant or nursing, or has reacted to a supplement before, ask your vet first.

How long should you judge a routine?

Follow the pack directions consistently and avoid changing several things at once. Keep a simple note of everyday movement—getting up, stairs, normal walk pace and willingness to play—rather than relying on a vague impression. Stop and seek advice if your dog is unwell or reacts badly.

FROM GUIDE TO CHOICE

Two Canine Vita formats use it.

Joint Health Tablets provide a measured tablet with green-lipped mussel, glucosamine and MSM. Joint Health Powder uses the same core ingredient route in a beef-flavoured powder mixed into food. Both contain shellfish.
